Beauty Insider: A Breath of Fresh Air—Adding Spring to Your Style

Say goodbye to winter by incorporating some of the gentle season into your wardrobe.
This year more than ever, spring has been a welcome concept long before it’s bloomed into reality. Here’s how to incorporate some of the gentle season into your wardrobe while you edge out winter:

Spring coats

Make your first purchase one that rings in the changes without exposing you to the elements. An annual spring coat use to be Mom-approved and now they’re fresh again. A pretty pastel, cream, or even soft coral without fancy hardware will look chic over your separates. This isn’t a trench – it’s a coat. Feminine and pretty. And who isn’t sick of their winter one right now?

Connect the dots

Navy and polka dots are made for each other. The cheery graphic gets a tone-down when in blue. Pair it with a cream or red cardi. A flirty polka dot skirt with sheer hose and nude heels is spring sexy.

Coming up roses

The new florals have bite. They’re pretty but they’ve got a touch of black, either as an outline or as part of the print. You’ll see this unexpected look in dresses as well as cigarette pants. Go for it. You’ll look fresh and modern and decidedly un-grandmotherly.

Sunny-side up

For a sartorial refresh, play with unexpected color. This is about drifting into spring while we wait for warmer temps. Try optimistic yellow or turquoise. Think lollipop brights or primary Crayola colors to usher in a newfound confidence. And don’t worry – it will all go with your black standbys. For now.

Get Shirty

Time to put away those cashmere turtlenecks and opt instead for a crisp white shirt. For effortlessness, find a no-iron fabric and wear it with pants and a statement necklace. For weekends, pair it with a jacket, your favorite jeans, and a happy pastel scarf or pashmina.

Bags

Put away your heavy winter tote and go with a sugary handbag. Powder blue, ballet pink, dusty coral have a daytime appeal because they’re different. Find a good size – not too ladylike - and you’ll avoid a saccharine overdose.

It’s still cold but winter is waning. Ease into spring like a poetic breath of fresh air. It won’t be long now and that breath will be warm and inviting at last.
