RI Beauty Expert: Soft Focus Spring – Pretty New Colors

Shopping in early spring is tricky. The colors that will look amazing on a tanned you in July may still seem a bit out there in April. It’s just too soon. But there’s an alternative palette made for this time of year when the sun is still the color of watered-down lemonade in the sky:  serene and velvety soft neutrals. Spring has a soft focus side too.

Fresh

Cool blues and pearl tones breathe life into classic styles. If you’re in the market for a statement garment this season such as a spring coat, opalescent grey tones will look fresh and uplifting especially after winter’s blacks.

Sophistication

Tone-on-tone is an elegant look any time of year but in spring, it really banishes the winter blues. Tan silk pants and a matching short-sleeve sweater is a sophisticated evening look with a sense of finesse.

Texture

To extend the blending of tones, a monochromatic look in neutrals is lovely, especially if the outfit is textural. Try cream cotton sateen pants with a small-cabled knit milky linen sweater. The look will feel familiar but more cultivated and refined.

My Fair Lady

These are naturally feminine colors that are soft and dreamy. Don’t be afraid to explore blush rose tones even if you don’t normally wear pinks. Dainty clutches in pale green flatter neutral dresses. The colors may be finespun but they’ll bring out your pretty side. Look for floaty blouses with sheerness in calming, delicate taupe prints.

Build the look

Sara Campbell of Newport carries the Sara pant in stone. Ankle length with a sophisticated side zip and fully lined. Perfect base to begin with. 115 Bellevue Ave. Newport

Talbot’s oatmeal linen flyaway sweater is the ideal spring topper. Texture galore and a touch of warmth for cool nights.  180 Country Rd. Barrington

Wouldn’t you know Sole Desire has the best nude shoe for spring? This one’s by designer Franco Sarto in the hottest style of the season: the wedge. 131 Swinburne Row, Newport

There’s a sense of purity in the air as spring finally appears. There will be plenty of time later for kicking up the hottest tropical colors. For now, isn’t it wonderful to just drift into the season with the lightness and ease of a beautiful soft palette?
