21 to Watch in RI in 2021: Alex Lavin

Alex Lavin, President of Growth Industries
In an industry riddled with politicos, lobbyists and friends of friends, Alex Lavin may be Rhode Island’s first corporate player in the emerging RI marijuana industry.

He is the President of Growth Industries — the Warwick facility is the first best-in-class facility in Rhode Island. Lavin says the company has invested $7.5 million into the Warwick facility

Lavin is an advocate for stronger regulations — he says the state has allowed the three existing medical marijuana facilities to buy and sell product that is of a "low standard."

Lavin says the state still needs to improve its regulatory structure and testing protocol. Specifically, he urges full panel testing — looking at all aspects of the product and more than just evaluation of THC levels.

“If you have cancer, you are dependent on that medicine. Do you want Tylenol made in some one’s basement or one from a clean and regulated facility?” asks Lavin

Lavin, who attended Providence College and lives in Providence is constantly flying somewhere in the world  — he serves on two advisory boards to the EU and was recently selected by the country of Belize’s Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries Kareem Musa as the consultant to the country to develop cannabis industry and sees it tying in with the tourism industry. Lavin believes it can generate between $200 and $400 million in revenue for the country.

In 2019, Lavin’s own Kelsey Green had its own regulatory hurdle with the Rhode Island's regulators and reached a consent decree. And, it had hired Speaker the House Nick Mattiello’s favorite lobbyist Mark Ryan — also the lobbyist for the Providence Journal.

When asked how the state's regulatory structure could improve, Lavin said that the regulations in Las Vegas and across the line in Massachusetts are more comprehensive and more protective of the consumer.

This is an industry poised to explode in RI.
