BankRI Grants $5K to Sophia Academy to Replace Stolen Computers

After learning the news that 60 computers, and other various technology items, were stolen from Providence's Sophia Academy, Bank Rhode Island (BankRI) stepped up with a charitable grant of $5,000 to help replace the lost equipment.

“The moment we heard about what happened at Sophia Academy, we knew we needed to do something to help the school and its students,” said Mark J. Meiklejohn, President and CEO of BankRI. “It’s extremely disappointing that anyone would do this, especially during the holiday season, but I have no doubt the community will rally together and make sure the school has everything they need to move forward with classes following the holiday break.”

Not only were 60 new laptop computers stolen, thieves took 20 Kindle Fire tablets that were used for math, six LCD projectors, an iPad, and computers specific to the school’s art programs. The donated funds will cover approximately 10 percent of the school's estimated $50,000 loss.
