Brian Goldner: 19 to Watch in 2019

Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner
No one will influence the psyche of Rhode Island more this year than Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner. After the loss of the PawSox to Worcester and the closing of Rhode Island’s beloved Benny's in 2017, Rhode Islanders are a bit raw.

He is poised to announce that Hasbro is:

Moving significant portions of Hasbro’s workforce from Rhode Island to Boston, California or some unknown destination;

Or, that Hasbro is consolidating its three campuses in Rhode Island into one dynamic creative cancel in Providence that would be a lightning rod for economic growth and transformational to the capital city;

Or, something else altogether, but homegrown Hasbro is a company that Rhode Islanders have a tremendous affinity for and pride in.

One thing is clear, 2018 was not a kind year to Hasbro. Toys "R" Us closed, Hasbro laid-off as many as 400, and the stock had a bumpy year.

Shares of Hasbro trailed the market in December, "shedding 11% compared with a 9% slump in the S&P 500, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence," said The Motley Fool.

"The drop pushed shares into modestly negative territory for the full year, down 11% compared with the market's 6% decline...revenue dropped to $3.1 billion over the past nine months from $3.6 billion in the year-ago period, and operating profit dove to $320 million, or 10% of sales, from $539 million, or 15% of sales," the report said.

Goldner at the end of 2019 could be a hero or heartbreaker for Rhode Island.
