Brown President Paxson Disappointed in Care New England Decision to End Negotiations

Care New England announced the decision to cease negotiations Tuesday morning.
Governor Gina Raimondo said in a statement, "I’m disappointed that the parties were not able to come to an agreement. I continue to believe that a locally-run, academic medical center is what’s in the best interest of Rhode Island. I have encouraged the parties to keep an open mind, remain open to future discussions, and to continue to pursue expanded collaboration that could pave the way to further integration down the road.”

It is disappointing that Care New England decided not to move forward with plans for an integrated system of health care, medical education and biomedical discovery in Rhode Island. Over the past decade, Brown University has continued to make significant investments in the Warren Alpert Medical School and in new growth in Providence’s Jewelry District, much of which centers on the intersection of biomedical teaching, research and commercial enterprise.
We are proud of the quality of care that Brown physicians provide and of our outstanding programs in medical education and research. And we continue to believe that merging Lifespan and Care New England, in close partnership with Brown, would deliver enormous benefits to our community in the form of greater access to high-quality affordable health care, and job growth that stems from a thriving biomedical research sector.
Care New England and Lifespan are valued partners to Brown’s Warren Alpert Medical School and will continue to be so in the future. In the coming weeks, we will work with these partners to assess whether there are areas of possible collaboration that would benefit our community. Despite this disappointing conclusion, we thank Governor Raimondo for convening these important meetings.
