Conservation Law Foundation Lauds Off Shore Wind Auction

In preparation of the first auction of offshore wind leases in federal waters off of Rhode Island and Massachusetts, the Conservation Law Foundation,a strong supporter of New England’s offshore wind energy industry issued the following:

“Tomorrow’s auction is the harbinger of an exciting new era in the development of renewable energy in the United States,” said Jonathan Peress, vice president and director of Clean Energy and Climate Change, Conservation Law Foundation.

“Offshore wind is New England’s most promising energy resource, and one we must pursue quickly and confidently to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. We are pleased to see multiple bidders vying for this historic opportunity to advance renewable energy in the region and kickstart the industry nationally. We look forward to working with the winning leaseholders to deploy new wind farms responsibly and to the many benefits this clean, renewable resource will convey to the people of New England,” said Peress.

Two of the leading candidates for the rights for the wind leases are Cape Wind - the long embattled project with strong Rhode Island ties and Deepwater Wind, Rhode Island-based wind energy company. Both have announced they will bid at Wednesday's auction. The auction will be conducted by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.
