Costco Proposal in Cranston Gets Public Review, Fenton-Fung Opposes Project Location

The project has been criticized by some elected officials and abutters as it would be the third major development adjacent to Chapel View and Garden City.
Massachusetts-based Coastal Partners has petitioned the city for a major amendment to the existing Mixed Use Planned District.

“Having walked door to door around the neighborhood last week, and been at the meeting last night, I've heard the concerns from these families first hand,” said Fenton-Fung who is challenging Speaker of the House Nick Mattiello in November.
“Mr. Mattiello has repeatedly broken his promises to these neighbors in regards to allowing the abutting Harrington Hall to become the state's dumping ground for sex offenders. I will not support this intense commercial and residential development, in an area with pre-existing traffic congestion, as it would further negatively impact the quality of life of these families. There are other, more appropriate locales for Costco in our great city,” said Fenton-Fung.
Council Members Ties and Comments
Council members who are running for Mayor were limited in their comments. “Lots of residents out to discuss Costco development at Mulligan’s complex, civic engagement is important and will weigh heavily on my decision. Your voice matters please continue to contact myself and all the city council people with your feedback on this project,” said City Council President Michael Farina — a GOP candidate for Mayor.
Farina has close political ties to the attorney for the developer John Bolton — a significant campaign donor.
Fenton-Fung's husband, Cranston Mayor Allan Fung, has endorsed Farina's opponent -- Ken Hopkins -- in the GOP primary.
Democratic candidate for Mayor Councilman Steve Stycos said in a post to Facebook, “Impressive to see 60+ people engaged and listening to an intelligent, concise explanation (complete with maps!) of the proposed development of Mulligan's Island. Next up is the site visit on August 11th at 5:30 pm at Mulligan's Island, Main Parking Lot. Any interested members of the public are welcome.”
Previously, Stycos has voiced concerns about the impact of the project. Fellow Democratic candidate for mayor Maria Bucci is yet to issue any statement on the proposal.
