Wright Deter is one of the artisans that makes Rhode Island the place to access the best design talent in the country. You would easily recognize Deter’s public work like the red and silver Olneyville Square bus stop shelters, but since my work is mostly about interiors, I wanted to highlight his other talents. Deter is an artist and master craftsman who creates work that is both sculptural and functional, with a wide variety of media. While he draws on many traditions in fine art and craft, much of his inspiration, as you will probably see, comes from his interest in medieval and asian art with a nod to art deco here and there. The environmentalist in me also happens to like the dumpster diver in Deter, whether it’s for inspiration or incorporation into his work.
