EDITORIAL: Rhode Island’s Broken Economy, Can We Do Better Than 50th?

Last, worst, bottom, faulty, inferior — no matter what you call it, Rhode Island’s latest business ranking is pathetic. We are behind Mississippi, West Virginia and Louisiana. Oh, that’s right we are behind every state because we are last.

REALITY: We went down two ranking positions from 48 to 50. When can we start fixing it?

EXCUSE #2 “We have implemented new programs like RhodeWorks that will improve our infrastructure and if we improve our infrastructure we will move up in the ranking.”

REALITY: Yes, we are ranked 50th for infrastructure, but in four other categories we are ranked above 40th. Including "access to capital" -- and Governor Raimondo’s own venture capital firm moved out of Rhode Island to Boston.

EXCUSE #3 “We were able to land 100 jobs from GE and that is a sign of our recovery.”

REALITY: TeeSpring left RI without Commerce Corp even knowing who the company is. Just for the record, TeeSpring employs hundreds in San Francisco and Kentucky, raised nearly $60 million in a hot minute in venture funding, and was ranked behind Uber and AirBnb at #21 as one of the top disruptor businesses in the world by CNBC

195 land is vacant, there is not a crane in the Capital city, and Superman Building is still empty.

It is time for leadership to transform Rhode Island’s economy — now.
