Fatima Hospital Service & Maintenance Staff Vote to Join Union

The United Nurses and Allied Professionals announced on Wednesday that the service and maintenance personnel at Fatima Hospital have voted to join the union.

"This organizing victory is a testament to the hard work and tenacity of many, especially our new sisters and brothers at Fatima who fought back against aggressive and misleading anti-union rhetoric from hospital administrators. They have spoken in a clear, unified voice in favor of union membership and we are proud to represent them, now and into the future," said Linda McDonald, RN, UNAP president.

According to McDonald, roughly 300 service and maintenance staff participated in the vote which was administered by the National Labor Relations Board and concluded over the span of multiple hospital shifts.

"I believe every individual has a right to collectively bargain for a fair wage and decent working conditions. As corporate health care interests are increasingly driven by the bottom line, I felt it was important that the service and maintenance workers be given a voice and an advocate at Fatima Hospital. This overwhelming vote makes that a reality," said Lynn Blais, RN, president of Fatima Hospital UNAP Local 5110.

The UNAP is a regional health care union representing almost 6,500 nurses, technologists, therapists, support staff and other health care workers employed in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Vermont.
