Gianfranco Marrocco: 14 Who Made a Difference in RI in 2014

Gianfranco Marrocco
One of the lightning rods in Rhode Island in 2014, restaurateur Gianfranco Marrocco's decision to open $3 Bar on Atwells Avenue brought Federal Hill back into the spotlight as it hadn't been since the days of Raymond Patriarca.

Marrocco battled the city over the violence that erupted on the Hill, claiming his successful business was not behind it -- but opponents shot back that Marrocco's business was representative of the increasing club nightlife -- and trouble -- on the Hill.

In response, Marrocco set up an online petition.

"The City of Providence voted recently to permanently shut down The $3 Bar located at 242 Atwells Avenue in Providence in the Federal Hill district. This is mostly due to the neighboring businesses complaining that this bar attracted "the wrong clientele." The people that go to this bar are people that no longer want to be forced to pay ridiculous prices at places like Venda Bar, Sienna, and Opa. These establishments have not been able to handle what should have been friendly competition and an opportunity to diversify the offerings of our neighborhood. Instead, they have organized to negatively perpetrate the $3 Bar in all media outlets," said Marrocco.  "The story that has not been shared is that Rhode Island having the highest unemployed rate in the nation has put 30 hard working people out of a job, and that while we sincerely regret any unapproved behavior that resulted in negative consequences, we have complied with all security laws that are require of any business across our state."

Staunchly anti-Cianci during the Providence Mayoral campaign, Marrocco represents a new wave of Federal Hill entrepreneurs, and serves as a reminder that Providence doesn't live in the past -- and that it is ever-changing.

"I think they should be ashamed of themselves, ganging up on another business owner," said Marrocco, who owns 8 total businesses in the Federal Hill area. "I brought this city back to life.  I was the first one in that plaza [DePasquale Plaza] with the outdoor dining."
