GoLocalProv Wins Metcalf Award for Diversity in Media

Michael Metcalf, Publisher of the Providence Journal
The Metcalf Award for Diversity in the Media has been given yearly to honor outstanding journalism -- and will be awarded in 2014 to GoLocalProv.com for its coverage of the Davey Lopes swimming pool closure and the lack of recreational opportunities provided to Providence children.

Since 1988, the Rhode Island for Community and Justice (RIJC) sponsored Metcalf Award is the only award given in the state to recognize journalists and media outlets for exemplary efforts to create engaging, educational and provocative stories that promote increased awareness of diversity, and a knowledgeable and engaged public. It was established to honor the memory of Michael Metcalf, the former chairman and chief executive officer of the Providence Journal Co. and publisher of The Providence Journal and Evening Bulletin, who died in a reported accident in 1987.

GoLocal invested tremendous staff resources in excess of 50 combined staff hours per week for more than four months – an unmatched dedication of journalism in order to serve the poorest and most disenfranchised population in the city. These articles, photo essays, TV and radio appearances focused on unveiling the issue of the dangers relating to the lack of swim instruction and the inherent adverse impact it has on African-American children especially.

"I am of the opinion that were it not for GoLocal's persistence in pursuit of the truth and demand for accountability within the Mayor's office, the Davey Lopes pool would be permanently closed. Instead, a commission was created to study the issue, and the repair and reopening of the pool remains a distinct possibility for this summer," said Leah Williams Metts, Chairwoman of the NAACP Providence Youth Council.

GoLocal reported on the work of community leaders who demanded accountability, transparency, and most importantly, fairness in recreational opportunities for all Providence residents.  GoLocal won the 2014 Metcalf Award in the digital media category.

"The presence of journalists and community paying tribute to these awardees is a testament to the importance of diversity in our state," says Dr. Toby Ayers, Executive Director of Rhode Island for Community and Justice.

Award Celebration

The award celebration will be held on May 20th.  The Award will be presented at 8:00am at Hotel Providence. For additional information, please contact Toby Ayers at [email protected] or 401-467-1717 x 102.
