National Land Conservation Conference to be Held in Providence

The National Land Conservation Conference, will be held in Providence at the Convention Center from Wednesday, September 17 through Saturday, September 20. Nearly 2,000 attendees are expected.

The Land Trust Alliance, the national organization that stages the conference, chose Rhode Island due to its strong community of Land Trusts that have a rich land conservation history, including many Land Trust-protected lands and innovative conservation programs. Rhode Island has more Land Trusts per square mile than any other state in the union.

“We are excited that the Alliance chose Providence and Rhode Island as the location for this year’s Rally and we are eager to show off the scenic spaces that make Rhode Island so beautiful,” said Rupert Friday, director of the Rhode Island Land Trust Council. “Rhode Island is distinguished by many Land Trusts which have worked for decades to protect the special places in communities around the state.”

The Land Trust Alliance represents more than 1.5 million land conservation professionals, volunteers and supporters in the U.S.  The Rally will bring together land conservation professionals from around the country to network, discuss the latest trends, and learn the latest innovations in land conservation from the nation’s preeminent land trust leaders.

Several field trips will be held during the Rally to showcase Rhode Island’s beautiful open spaces - many of which are protected by Land Trusts. These trips include hiking, kayaking, history walks, displays of local farming and aquaculture, and sampling of the locally grown food.

Although field trips are for Rally attendees, the public can enjoy similar activities organized by local organizations during “Land Trust Days,” which continue in Rhode Island communities through September 28.  A full schedule of Land Trust Days activities can be found here.

The keynote speaker at this year’s Rally on September 19 will be Andy Goodman, a nationally recognized author, speaker and consultant in the field of public interest communications. His keynote address will be about storytelling, the theme of one of his recent books:  Storytelling as Best Practice. He is also the author of Why Bad Ads Happen to Good Causes and Why Bad Presentations Happen to Good Causes.

About Rhode Island’s Land Trusts

Land Trusts are nonprofit organizations that acquire land or conservation easements for the purposes of protection, sustainability and eco-conscious public use. Lands protected by Land Trusts promote and protect community health and well-being. They provide environmental benefits and recreational opportunities that enable individuals and families to get outdoors, relax, and feel happier and healthier. Without protection and stewardship by Land Trusts, thousands of acres of land would be lost to over-development. And, the public would have to travel farther and farther to enjoy naturally beautiful places and outdoor recreation. Land Trusts also contribute to quality of life and health, by making lands available for growing healthy local food, protecting drinking water, forest resources and wildlife. Rhode Island is very fortunate to be home to over 45 Land Trusts, protecting 1000s of acres of land. Rhode Island has more Land Trusts per square mile than any other state in the union.
