NEW: Battery Manufacturer Brings 165 Jobs to RI

A Connecticut-based manufacturer of batteries that have been used on the Mars rover, mini-subs, and torpedoes is coming to Rhode Island—bringing with it 165 jobs, Governor Lincoln Chafee announced this morning.

Yardney Technical Products, which is currently located at Pawcatuck, will be moving to 2000 South County Trail in East Greenwich. A groundbreaking ceremony is set for tomorrow.

The move comes as a big economic development win for Chafee at a time when he is facing stiff opposition from business groups over his proposed budget. GoLocalProv also reported last week that Chafee had failed to bring corporate giant GE Capital to Rhode Island.
