NEW: Newport Anti-Casino Group Responds to Newport Grand Sale to Twin River

In light of the news that Twin River will be buying Newport Grand, Citizens Concerned About Casino Gambling (CCACG) released the following statement on Wednesday.

CCACG, which was established in 1977, had most recently spearheaded successful efforts in 2012 and 2014 to oppose table games at Newport Grand on the ballot, as it failed to garner voter approval in Newport both times.

CCACG President Liz Taber said:

“We note that Twin River Management Group stated they will not pursue a ballot measure in the 2016 election cycle. However, we will remain active and engaged to ensure that they honor their pledge to our community. We will also continue to work to promote policies to help small businesses and support sustainable economic development projects."

Taber spoke with GoLocal following the statement release on Wednesday.

"We'd heard various rumblings for the most part. We'd heard there were as many as four other possible scenarios," said Taber. "Joe Paolino did call me this morning to let me know about the news conference."

"Like our statement said, we've read that [Twin River] is not planning any 2016 referendum but history being a guideline, we've seen the evolution of Table Games in Lincoln, and promises of no more development there that have gone unheeded," said Taber. "We'd like to hold them to their pledge.  We remain cautious and vigilant, and hopefully they've got some good plans about what they intend to do with Newport Grand."

The group’s next meeting will be held at the Newport Public Library on Saturday, March 7 at 10 AM.
