NEW: Solomon Proposes Master Tax Stabilization Plan for 195 Land

Michael Solomon
Providence City Council President and mayoral candidate Michael Solomon is pledging to “take the politics out” of the I-195 land development planning.

“I want to send a loud and clear message to the development community that Providence is open for business. If we don’t bring certainty to this process we are losing a once in a lifetime opportunity to grow our tax base, grow our population and create much needed jobs,” said Solomon. “I plan to reach out to the developers who have expressed frustration with the process to assure them my plan will remove the politics and uncertainty that has plagued this city for far too long.”

Solomon plans to release his master tax predictability program for the I-195 land in Providence, hoping to “bring certainty and remove politics” from the development process.

“My tax predictability plan will outline specific criteria that must be met by projects to qualify for consideration,” Solomon said.  Solomon’s plan will include a new development process that will not need mayoral or city council approval.

Solomon formed a task force last year to assess economic development issues in Providence.  The task force’s findings were submitted to the City Council in April 2014.

“The Providence Economic Development Task Force proposed a fifteen year city wide tax predictability plan to encourage development on underutilized and blighted lots throughout the city, and I plan on submitting the elements of their recommendations at the next council meeting,” stated Solomon.

“This process will be conducted administratively, not politically and it will attract developers to Providence. Our current reputation of having to know the right people to get something done in Providence has not served us well,” Solomon added.
