New: Swipely's Davis Speaks Out in Support of Uber

Rhode Island business leader Angus Davis released an open letter to Governor Lincoln Chafee opposing the enactment of a Public Utilities Commission regulation that would affect transport services companies, specifically Uber, from operating in the state.

Uber is a mobile app that lets users request to be picked up by a driver, on demand, in 10 minutes or less, and be taken to their requested destination.  The PUC is looking to place a $40 minimum fare on Uber rides, to keep it from competing with the state's taxi industry.

In the letter, Davis pleads, "This regulation would kill an innovative service called Uber from operating in Rhode Island, in order to protect taxi operators from competition. This panders to protect a special interest, raises consumer prices, and limits a powerful new tool to reduce drunk driving, which causes 37% of road fatalities in our state."
