Pawtucket to Consider Future of Apex Site in Closed-Door City Council Session This Week

The City of Pawtucket City Council is slated to consider the fate of the Apex property in a closed-door session this week, according to a communication sent from Mayor Donald Grebien to members of the council.

The development marks the latest for the consideration of the Apex site, which was pitched for the new location of the Pawtucket Red Sox — before the team announced its intention to move to Worcester this past August.

Grebien sent the following letter to council member last week:

Dear Honorable Members:

The City is moving forward to revitalize our downtown and our riverfront district, including the center of downtown where the Apex building stands. This may happen either through the leasing of the Apex building to a commercial tenant whose the City supports of through the acquisition and redevelopment of the Apex properties through the PRA. The City Council has a very important role to play in this process.

The City is currently engaged in a formal mediation regarding the future of the Apex property. Therefore, I have asked Council President Moran to call a special meeting of the City Council…to provide the Council with an update on the City’s endeavors to acquire the property and discuss our options and strategies for ensuring the best outcome for the City and all parties involved. Because of the confidential nature of his matter, we ask that the discussion that place in closed session.

I feel strongly that these properties are the key to the city’s economic revitalization going forward, and by working together, we will bring this revitalization to fruition.
