Fogarty Building Demolition Halted in Providence Amidst Questions

Demolition on the Fogarty Building starting in March - but has since stopped.
The demolition of the Fogarty Building has been halted in Providence, with the developer refusing to answer questions as to why.

"I've heard several reasons why it stopped, and why it's not moving forward right now," said Providence City Council President Luis Aponte. "I've heard easement issues with Hasbro. The second being that construction bids came in much higher than anticipated, and the developer might be approaching Commerce to fill the gap --  that they are saying commerce is so robust tin Boston it's hard to get contractors. I've also heard there have been some issue with demolition and interfering with IT at Habsro.  It's a pretty intense process."

The Procaccianti Group is overseeing the project that includes the tear down of the Brutalist-style building and a hotel set to go up in the fall, but work has since stopped on the demolition, which began in March - and is directly adjacent to the Hasbro office building.

"But again these are all third and fourth hand, I haven't spoken [with the developer] or Hasbro," said Aponte. "It's been about ten days. If I recall the schedule was the building would be down middle to end of May and [hotel] construction up this fall."

The Procaccianti Group did not respond to request for comment.  The project has been in the works for over ten years.

Union Head: Hold Up Not Unexpected

"From what I understand, is they were ahead [of schedule] of the tear down and now they're at different point with the proximity of that last corner next to Hasbro," said Michael Sabitoni, President of the Rhode Island Building and Construction Trades. "They're going over their plan of attack.  I think in the next ten days that it will come down."

"I don't know about Hasbro, construction is always a temporary inconvenience," said Sabitoni of the purported issues. "I'm sure they're communicating with Hasbro on the plan of attack.  It's not uncommon -- certain aspects go a lot quicker and certain scopes of work go slower than others. When you get in a tight situation you want to do it correctly."

Latest in Demolition Development

The Procaccianti Group touted the demolition of the "obsolete" Brutalist-style building to make way for a "gleaming" hotel in early March

"Please join Governor Raimondo, Mayor Elorza, Leaders from the Building Trades and Executives from the Procaccianti Companies, as we celebrate economic development by commencing demolition of the obsolete Fogarty Building to make way for a gleaming new upscale hotel," wrote the Procaccianti Group on March 6.

The demolition was not without scrutiny, as a "funeral" was held for the Fogarty Building's demise.

Now, work on the tear-down has been stopped while the Procaccianti Group has to address easement issues neighboring Hasbro.
