Prov. Chamber of Commerce Urges Leaders to Reform Estate Tax Law

The Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce is urging State Senate and House Leaders to pass legislation to reform the current estate tax law.

On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee is holding a hearing on S 2074, which is legislation that would eliminate the estate tax cliff and increase the exemption to $2 million.

At least a dozen bills have been introduced to improve the law this legislative session.

Laurie White's statement

“Reforming the estate tax law will reduce a burdensome tax on our middle-class families and help Rhode Island keep and attract more businesses and families as our economy continues to recover. The current law, which caused Kiplinger to list the Ocean State as the second ‘least friendly place to die’ in America, puts Rhode Island at a significant disadvantage as we compete for skilled workers and growing businesses. On behalf of the Rhode Island business community, we urge Senate and House Leadership to pass legislation to eliminate the estate tax cliff and increase the threshold for triggering the estate tax,” said Laurie White, President of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce.

The Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce has advocated for state lawmakers to reform the estate tax, arguing that the current law is harmful to Rhode Island’s economic recovery. In addition to S 2074, introduced by Senator Edward O’Neill, which will be debated at Tuesday’s Senate Finance Committee hearing, the following bills have been introduced this year to improve Rhode Island’s estate tax law: S 2065 (Bates), S 2073 (Walaska), S 2143 (Felag), S 2320 (Jabour), S 2329 (Jabour), S 2481 (McCaffrey), H 7064 (Craven), H 7140 (Ruggiero), H 7658 (O’Neill), H 7807 (Marcello), and H 7814 (Morgan).
