John Dorsey, the receiver for Providence Place Mall, has announced an increase in parking fees for visitors.

Dorsey issued a statement about the increase, but refused to answer questions.

In October, Superior Court Judge Brian Stern placed the bankrupt mall into a receivership.

According to Dorsey, “For the first time in a decade, Providence Place is making an adjustment to its parking rates—an update that supports ongoing investments in the property.”

“We’ve taken a thoughtful and responsible approach, keeping short-term parking very affordable: the first 30 minutes remain free, the next 30 minutes at $1, and a two-hour visit at $2. For a longer parking stretch (two-five hours at $10), these rates remain very competitive in the downtown area and are intended to balance accessibility with the need to reinvest in Providence Place,” Dorsey added.

He claimed the increased parking fees would support new parking gates, kiosks, and security.

Dorsey would not respond to these questions from GoLocal:

For the vast majority of visitors (2 to 5 hour group), the parking fee is going up 400%. Isn't that an anti-consumer message?

Just down the road is Garden City, which has a much better collection of stores and free parking. Isn't it the wrong message for the very vulnerable mall?
