Providence Ranked Among Worst in US for First Time Homebuyers

Providence is ranked as one of the worst cities in the country for first time homebuyers. 

Providence is ranked 441st out of 448 ranked cities, according to a study done by NerdWallet. 

“Buying your first house is a major milestone, replete with tough choices, mountains of paperwork and a mortgage that may follow you into retirement. While price and location are important during your home search, there’s much more to consider,” said NerdWallet.

NerdWallet gave Providence a score of 20.78 for economics, 14.45 for livability, 15.28 for stability all averaging out to a final score of 17.23 

The Rankings 

Providence is ranked 441st behind Cleveland, Ohio and New Haven, Connecticut at 439 and 440, while ranking ahead of Hemet, California and Waterbury, Connecticut at 442 and 443 respectively. 

The worst city for first time homebuyers is Paterson, New Jersey, while the best city is Carmel, Indiana. 

The Method 

NerdWallet analyzed the most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, online data provider NeighborhoodScout, and Down Payment Resource for the 448 largest places in the U.S. by population. Down Payment Resource’s data allowed us to assess the availability of homeownership assistance programs, which can help cash-short first-time homebuyers.
