RI Company to Provide Free Holiday Meals for 2,000 Rhode Islanders

Feed 1,000 expects to serve 2,000 needy Rhode Islanders on Saturday.
The Pawtucket-based Priority Management Group (PMG) will provide free meals and winter coats to Rhode Island’s less fortunate individuals this weekend as part of its third annual holiday meal event to be held on Saturday, December 14, from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Rhode Island Convention Center.

In addition to a full-course holiday meal, there will be holiday music, gift bags with toiletries, snacks, toys for children, a coffee station with free thermoses, cookies, a flu shot clinic and a blood pressure station administered by the Rhode Island Department of Health.

As was true in years past, individuals will be bused in from state facilities such as Amos House, McAuley House, Crossroads Rhode Island and Operation Stand Down—all of which provide shelter to Rhode Island’s homeless population.

“Many Rhode Island families are struggling to keep a roof over their heads or put food on the table each night,” said Richard Santilli, CFO at Priority Management Group. “Each year we have easily surpassed our goal; proving that the need is very real. With the help of hundreds of volunteers and local support, we want to expand our reach and feed 2,000.”

Background

Feed 1,000 is the brainchild of Rhode Island business partners Robert Skeffington and Rich Santilli. In 2011, Santilli and Skeffington, the owners of PMG and founders of PMG Charities decided to forego its annual Christmas party and instead provided a festive Holiday meal for more than 1,200 Rhode Islanders in need. Last year, the number of individuals served increased to 1,800. Now in its third year, organizers are expecting to serve 2,000 needy Rhode Islanders on Saturday.

A Model for the Nation

So what does the future hold for Feed 1,000? For Santilli, the sky's the limit. “Our hope is that word gets out about what we’re doing in Rhode Island and that other states follow the example that we’ve set,” Santilli told GoLocal. "Ultimately we would like to have a coalition of states championing our cause and even have an annual ‘Feed 1,000 Day’ across the United States.”

How to Get Involved

If you are interested in volunteering your time, either prior to the event or the day of the event, sign up at www.feed1000.org. Volunteer duties include but are not limited to greeting guests, seating guests, managing the toy section, managing the coat section as well as serving food. Assignments will be issued at check in on the day of the event.

Event organizers are still looking for donations—including warm jackets, hats, gloves, baby diapers, and toiletries such as baby wipes, toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes and paper towels. If you are unable to provide any of these items but would still like to help out, cash contributions are welcome.
