RI Unemployment Rate Drops to 5.3% in April

The RI Department of Labor and Training announced that the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for April 2016 was 5.3 percent, down one tenth of a percentage point from the March rate of 5.4 percent. This remains the lowest unemployment rate since August of 2007.

Over the year, the number of employed RI residents was up 2,000 from April 2015.

The number of unemployed RI residents was 29,600, down 300 from the March figure of 29,900. Over the year, the number of unemployed dropped by 5,200.

The RI labor force totaled 552,800 in April 2016, unchanged from March 2016 and down 3,200 from April 2015.

Overall, the U.S. unemployment rate was 5.0 percent in April 2016 unchanged from the previous month and down four-tenths of a percentage point over the year.
