Smart Benefits: New Study Shows Health Costs Hurt Small Biz Hiring

Not only are these increases passed on to employees, the survey results reveal they have other negative consequences for workers as well:
• In the survey, 30 percent of small businesses indicated they’re holding off on hiring new employees
• Almost 50 percent of respondents are delaying salary increases
And long term, the survey results point to another downside for employees: hours worked will fall 1.5- 2 percent from 2017-2024.
Despite the impacts on their businesses, 67% of survey respondents believe offering benefits is very important for recruiting or retaining quality employees. As a result, they’re likely to continue to offer coverage rather than shift employees to the new health insurance exchanges.
