Smart Benefits: Time to Review Premium Tax Credit Payments

For individuals and families getting advance payments of the premium tax credit, now is a good time to check to see if the premium assistance should be adjusted.

The advance payments are paid directly to your insurance company and lower out-of-pocket cost for your health insurance premiums, Since changes in income or family size may affect the credit, be sure to report the following changes that have occurred since you signed up for your health insurance plan:

•    Increases or decreases in your household income including, lump sum payments, such as lump sum payment of Social Security benefits
•    Marriage
•    Divorce
•    Birth or adoption of a child
•    Other changes affecting the composition of your tax family
•    Gaining or losing eligibility for government sponsored or employer sponsored health care coverage
•    Moving to a different address

By reporting the changes when they happen, you’ll avoid getting too much advance payment – which means you may owe additional money or get a smaller refund when you file your taxes – or too little,  which could cause you to miss out on premium assistance that would lower your out-of-pocket costs for your monthly premiums.

To find out how your premium tax credit may change if your circumstances change, see the Premium Tax Credit Change Estimator. To report changes and adjust the amount of your advance payments of the premium tax credit, contact your exchange.
