SUCCEED WITH STYLE: Never Underestimate the Power of a Career Fair

Last week, I participated in a Career Fair in Chicago hosted by the University of Phoenix. The Career Fair was one of the events put on that week in conjunction with National Education week. I had the privilege of conducting workshops for those who are going through a job transition. I was able to connect with a number of individuals throughout the event.

One of the things that shocks me every time I present at these job fairs are the people who show up unprepared. I have seen people in jeans and tee-shirts, people with their children and even attendees who look like they are going on vacation rather than an interview. A career fair is an opportunity for you to meet several companies in one location, connect with key recruiters, share your resume, be pre-screened and possibly schedule a first interview. Don’t miss an opportunity to get hired because you are unprepared.

Here are some tips that will help you through the process.

1. Do your research. Prior to a Career Fair, review the list of companies attending. Figure out which companies are a fit for you, research them and be prepared to meet with the recruiters at their booth.

2. Make sure your resume is current and printed on quality paper. Bring several copies with you.

3. Upon check in, review the list of companies attending again. Sometimes companies sign up last minute and others cancel.

4. Dress the part. This IS an interview. You will be meeting several recruiters from different companies. Their first impression of you matters.

5. Be prepared for mini style interviews. Clear concise answers will help you a stand out from the crowd.

6. Be prepared to ask good questions and not the ones that can be answered by going to the company’s web site. Again, this will help you stand out.

7. Don’t look like a bag lady. Take only one bag with you- either your tote or your handbag. Upon arrival at the fair you are given a bag to collect company information. Many times I have seen women with their tote, handbag, fair bag and portfolio. It is hard to look confident and pulled together when you look like a pack horse.

8. Nonverbal communication counts. When talking to recruiters, stand up tall maintain eye contact, smile and give a strong handshake.

9. Maintain a positive attitude. The job search is stressful but people want to hire and work with those who can keep a positive, “can do” attitude.
