Toys 'R' Us is getting ready for a liquidation of its bankrupt U.S. operations, according to multiple reports

The company is the largest freestanding toy retailer in America. RI-based Hasbro, the largest toy company in America, saw its stock fall 2 percent on the news. A closure of Toys 'R' Us would be a big blow to toy manufacturers like Hasbro and Mattel. It is estimated that Toys R Us sells 15 to 20 percent of all toys in America.

The Wayne, N.J., company has struggled to find a buyer or reach a debt-restructuring deal with lenders. The company did more than $11 billion in sales in 2017.

There are six Toys 'R' Us and Babies 'R' Us stores in the Providence region — they employ hundreds of workers.

“The company recently announced plans to close 184 stores, or about 20% of its roughly 800 U.S. stores, as it worked with creditors to restructure its debts. But now it is now evaluating bids to liquidate the remainder of its U.S. locations, the people said,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

“An announcement could come as soon as Monday when the parties are expected to appear at a bankruptcy hearing in Richmond, Va., the people said. How much Toys 'R' Us decides to liquidate will depend on the size of the liquidator bids it receives, the people said.”
