Food and Wine Selects RI’s Best Sandwich...Hmmm

Rabe #1?
Food and Wine is the magazine that claims it “inspires the impassioned and adventurous epicure.”

This week they announced their list of the best sandwiches in each state — Pennsylvania, no surprise, was the cheese steak.

But, in Rhode Island, the selection was shall we say kindly, unique. And certainly not a best seller or really one that we have ever heard of.

The magazine in its write-up about Rhode Island did pander to the Italian ethnic heritage of the state.

GoLocal reached out to the writer of the story, senior editor David Landsel, to check to see if he had ever eaten a sandwich in Rhode Island or even been visited the state (driving through from Manhattan to the Cape would get partial credit), but no word back.

The magazine wrote:

Proudly home to the highest per capita population of Italian Americans this side of the Atlantic, there's always someone around to make you a classic grinder, stuffed with all the cured meats. You can find such a thing at Dee's Deli in Cranston, but we're there for something you don't see every day—a fresh Italian roll filled with garlicky broccoli rabe and thick slices of sharp provolone cheese.

You don't have to be a vegetarian to get hooked on the delicious simplicity of the thing—this is one of their most popular sellers. Missing the meat? Add links of the house broccoli rabe-stuffed sausage. A winner, either way.

For actual Rhode Islanders, how about veal or chicken parm, a clam roll (with or without the bellies -- it's a personal choice) or a lobster roll?

If you have thoughts on what the best sandwich is in the state, do let us know.
