Johnny Rockets, the popular burger and shake chain that's been blasting out Aretha Franklin and serving up juicy family-friendly meals, has just gotten a makeover for its 25th anniversary. And Morris Nathanson Design is behind the updated look.

The Pawtucket firm's involvement came at the request of 20-year Johnny Rockets franchise veteran Lloyd Sugarman from Rhode Island. The new design prototype was unveiled by the popular chain with 300 corporate and franchise-owned restaurants in 30 states and 16 countries, including 30 Six Flags amusement park locations and 11 Royal Caribbean cruise ships.

More neon, sleek vinyl

The updated look features colorful neon signs; pop art-inspired decorative disks that showcase Johnny Rockets’ signature Hamburgers, Fries and Shakes along with two-toned red and ivory sleek vinyl upholstery.  “We’re thrilled to have created a full complement of new design options for our franchise partners and property owners,” said Cris Pangan, vice president of development for Johnny Rockets.  “The designs balance what is unique and timeless about Johnny Rockets with a fresh, contemporary new look.”

“All the elements were carefully coordinated to be playful, impactful and durable,” said Josh Nathanson, Morris Nathanson Design senior designer.  “The beauty of this prototype is that the various package options work as easily when retrofitting existing sites as they do when fitting into new sites.  And because the options can be customized to accommodate individual landlord requirements, they’re well-suited to both inline mall locations and stand-alone units.”

Where to see the new look

Components of the design prototype are being unveiled at Johnny Rockets restaurants in locations like South Street Seaport in New York City, The Banks, OH; Melrose Avenue, CA; and Cannery Row, CA, as well as  Providence's Thayer Street location. The truest makeover, according to the company, is right here in the 401, at Providence Place Mall.

Each year, Johnny Rockets serves 17 million hamburgers, 11.3 million soda pops, 8.3 million shakes and malts, 8 million pounds of fries, 2.1 million orders of onion rings and 815,000 gallons of ice cream.
