New Food Trucks Hit Providence

Jake's Sweet Meat BBQ
Adding some southern zing to the scene, the inventive minds at Jake's are putting out a fantastic array of traditional and creative BBQ sandwiches and platters. After chef stints in other states including Florida, Jake and Charity Amenta returned to Rhode Island for nearby grandparent access for their first baby, and popped up a business. "A barbecue truck is what Providence needed," Jake said, adding that he had considered opening a gourmet Italian sandwich shop, but, as he says, "there is one on every block."
The daily menu has standard crowd-pleasers like pulled pork, smoked chicken, and beef brisket for $6-$8, and combos for $8-$10. Sweet tea adds another genuine Southern dimension. So does Jake's recipe for his meatloaf--straight from his grandmother. Daily specials include interesting variations. Yesterday, Jake's featured a fried pork chop with chipotle honey mustard and cheese for $3.50.

When a California-based chef brings back some LA food truck culture with him to the streets of Providence, good things are in store. That's the promise with Mijos Tacos, which just began parking up near Brown University in the evenings, enjoying the upscale truck ambience anchored by Mama Kim's Korean food.
Chef Peter Gobin offers what he calls "a Los Angeles style taco truck with traditional Mexican street food."
Mijos offers fresh tastes that Californians know and love--among traditional tacos, burritos, and guacamole, look for chili verde con carne with crema and warm tortillas, or chorizo, or shrimp with pickled chiles. Mijos also pops up brunch on weekends, offering hangover-fixers eggs and salsa plus breakfast burritos.
Parked most mornings near Faunce Arch next to the Brown University Campus, most nights in Fones Alley off Thayer Street. Check Facebook and Twitter for exact timing and specials.
