NEW: Jonathan's Sprouts Recall - Alfalfa Sprouts May Contain Salmonella

In a news release Sunday, Jonathan's Sprouts of Rochester said the recall includes conventionally grown as well as alfalfa sprouts, regardless of sell-by date. Last week, an earlier recall announcement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration specifically excluded the company's organic products.
Six retail sprouts products have been pulled from the market. They are sold in plastic containers at A&P, Grand Union, Stop & Shop, Shaws, Hannaford, Donnelans, Foodmaster, Truccis, Roche Brothers stores:
-- Jonathan's 4 oz. Alfalfa Sprouts
-- Jonathan's 4 oz. Organic Alfalfa Sprouts
-- Jonathan's 4 oz. Alfalfa with Radish Sprouts
-- Jonathan's 4 oz. Organic Alfalfa with Radish Sprouts
-- Jonathan's 4 oz. Gourmet Sprouts
-- Jonathan's 4 oz. Alfalfa with Dill Sprouts
-- Jonathan's 8 oz. Alfalfa Sprouts
-- Jonathan's Organic Sprout Salad
The recalled sprouts were also distributed in bulk to food service establishments (restaurants, etc.) in Rhode Island, as well as Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. The recall includes all codes:
-- Jonathan's 5 lb. Bulk Alfalfa in waxed 18" x 11" cardboard cartons
-- Jonathan's 5 lb. Bulk Organic Alfalfa Sprouts in waxed 18" x 11" cardboard cartons
-- Jonathan's 4 lb. Bulk Alfalfa Sprouts in bags, 2 lb. bags in 13" x 9" x 6" cardboard cartons
The contamination problem was identified through routine sampling as part of the USDA Microbiological Data Program.
