PHOTOS: Top RI High School Students Compete in Culinary Arts for $700,000 in Scholarships

The Rhode Island Hospitality Education Foundation (RIHEF) hosted the 13th Annual Rhode Island High School Culinary Arts, Foodservice & Hotel Management Competition on Tuesday.
GoLocalProv was there to capture six local teams competing for a total of $700,000 in scholarship money and the chance to represent Rhode Island in the National ProStart Invitational in Baltimore, Maryland.

GoLocal photographer Richard McCaffrey captured the preparation, the stress, and the tough judging.

Nearly 600 Rhode Island students are enrolled in ProStart, a two-year hospitality career-building program designed by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation.
Nearly another 100 Rhode Island students are enrolled in the Hospitality & Tourism Management program, The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute’s (AHLEI) two-year, turnkey high school curriculum.

This year’s event featured the top 50 culinary, food service management, and hotel management competitors from CHARIHOTech, Charles E. Shea Senior High School, the Exeter Job Corps Academy, the Newport Area Career and Technical Center, the Warwick Area Career and Technical Center, and William M. Davies, Jr. Career and Technical High School.
