Rhode Island's Best Burgers

Consider it guilt by… geography? Louis’ Lunch in New Haven is said to be the inventor of the American hamburger, in 1900. In the short 114 years hence, we Americans have done a pretty good job of perfecting this iconic meal. From haute cuisine to fast food, the burger plays no favorites when it comes to demographics. It is truly an everyman’s sandwich. But why does the all-America meal have a name that references Germany? Well, while meat itself was a rarity in medieval society, it was often enjoyed by the upper classes.  Russian ships brought recipes for steak tartare to the busy port of Hamburg, which between the 13th and 17th centuries was one of the largest in Europe. In the 19th century, the Hamburg America Line began travelling frequently to the port of New York, and, well, you know those New York chefs. In 1873, Delmonico’s Restaurant in lower Manhattan began serving hamburgers for about 11 cents – an outrageous amount for the time. We
here in Rhode Island have perfected the hamburger, too… look no further than accolades from the national press which have called Providence a top burger town in the U.S., and the calling out of Harry’s Bar and Burger as some of the best in the nation. We agree, and have found 5 other places where you can enjoy this favorite all summer long.
