The East Side of Providence has a new bagel shop.

Eastside Bagel Co. is now open at 149 Elmgrove Avenue.

The commercial block already counts a deli (the Butcher Shop) and a donut shop (Knead) among its offerings.

The location is the former home of the Alayne White Spa, and most recently “Foodbeat Mediterranean Grille.”

Eastside Bagel Co. is under the direction of the same ownership, GoLocal has learned.

And just where did the bagel originate? According to ChatGPT:

"The bagel is believed to have originated in Poland during the 17th century. It was commonly eaten by Jewish communities in Poland. The word "bagel" is derived from the Yiddish word "beygl," which in turn comes from the Polish word "obwarzanek," meaning "bracelet."

Bagels made their way to the United States with Jewish immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and have since become a popular breakfast item and snack in many parts of the world.
