EpiVax: 14 To Watch in Rhode Island in 2014

EpiVax is RI's frontrunner for researching vaccines and immunology.
Providence-based biotech EpiVax, Inc., is an immunology company that has "developed comprehensive analytical capabilities in the field of computational immunology" and applies those tools to re-engineer therapeutic proteins and to design new vaccines. The company continues to forge ahead as a groundbreaking health science company in the state. Basically, as stated on their website, they "do it all."

"EpiVax is a privately held immuno-informatics company with a truly global presence. We not only successfully provide services to large and small biotech companies, we also design our own T cell vaccines and are developing a first-in-class therapy called Tregitopes," they write.

EpiVax has been for the past several years the recipient of NIH funding—approximately $500,000 in 2011, and then $2.25 million in 2012—for flu vaccine development, as well as autoimmune disease treatment.

As for Tregitopes, they were discovered in 2008 by the team of Dr. Annie De Groot and William Martin at EpiVax, and the program is currently managed by Scientific Director Leslie Cousens, Ph.D. The original discovery was published in the journal Blood in 2008. Tregitopes are linear sequences contained within the framework of monoclonal antibodies and immunoglobulin G (also known as gamma globulin). The Tregitopes act as a natural "off switch” and have been shown in standard preclinical models as well as by collaborating laboratories to suppress and treat autoimmune disease, allergy, and to effectively suppress the imunogenicity of co-administered proteins.

While it might sound somewhat complicated to the average person, what you should know is that EpiVax is at the forefront of scientific discoveries in vaccines and immunology, right here in Rhode Island. Stay tuned for major developments to come from EpiVax.
