NEW: Complete Boil Water Order Lifted for All 5 Narragansett & South Kingstown Water Systems

Boil water advisory is lifted
The boil water advisory for customers of Narragansett and South Kingstown has been lifted, announced the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH).

The advisory had been in place since August 31.

“Ensuring the safety and quality of Rhode Island’s drinking water is one of the core functions of the Rhode Island Department of Health. Our team worked almost around the clock since these advisories went into place to get safe water coming out of people’s taps again as soon as possible, to educate residents and business owners on the boil water guidance, and to monitor the region for any drinking water-related illnesses. However, this could not have happened without the partnership of dozens of leaders at the state and local levels. We will continue to build on these collaborations to ensure that people continue to have safe water to drink, safe and healthy food to eat, clean air to breathe, and healthy communities to call home, regardless of their ZIP code,” said Director of Health Nicole Alexander-Scott, MD, MPH.

The source of the contamination has yet to be identified.

The issue started to become a political football. Governor Gina Raimondo's office defended their response to the crisis. "Governor Raimondo has spoken with local officials (including legislators, town managers and town council members), local businesses, local school districts, the state Department of Health and other agencies. Last weekend, the Governor visited a filling station in South County and spent time listening to local response teams and local residents. She’s personally directed Dr. Alexander-Scott to provide regular public health updates and coordinate with local officials. Additionally, Commerce is working with the local communities to help local businesses understand and navigate any programs that they could be eligible for through the federal government," said Mike Raia of the Governor's staff.

But, her Democratic primary challenger Matt Brown criticized the response. Brown said, "Drinking water for thousands of Rhode Islanders in South County is contaminated, while Governor Raimondo seems to be completely absent on the issue. We understand that Governor Raimondo’s office has received a wave of calls about the days-long boil order for residents in some parts of South County, but she has yet to comment on the situation or Suez Water’s responsibility to its customers.

She should immediately respond to this emergency, and to the residents who are pleading with the state for help."

Advisory Lifted

According to RIDOH, all Narragansett and South Kingstown systems had samples on three straight days that did not contain coliform bacteria, including E. coli bacteria.

A sample taken early in the day on September 7 in the Narragansett – North End system indicated the presence of coliform bacteria. However, the system did flushing and treatment that afternoon and drew three additional samples that day.

That second set of samples on September 7, as well as samples drawn on September 8 and September 9, were absent coliform bacteria, including E. coli bacteria.

Using Water Again

Although the advisory is lifted, RIDOH is advising customers that there are steps that people should take before using the water again to ensure safety.

According to RIDOH, “people should clean and sanitize refrigerators with water dispensers and/or ice machines, replace any water treatment filter cartridges, and run all faucets and taps for 10 minutes.”
