NEW: Brown University Investigates Potential Norovirus Outbreak

The university is working with the Rhode Island Department of Health "to report these illnesses, to determine a possible cause, and to obtain and follow their guidance to minimize further spread," according to Dr. Edward Wheeler, director of University Health Services, who sent a letter by e-mail to all students Wednesday morning, March 20, 2013. The university's Facilities Management Custodial Division is also providing "additional cleaning of surfaces to further prevent the spread of this viral illness."
"The illness is consistent with a viral illness, possibly norovirus," Dr. Wheeler said in the university-wide email. "Specific testing is being done and may take a few days to confirm. Antibiotics are not effective, tests are usually not needed, and supportive treatment with hydration is usually all that is needed."
