Department of Health Reports 2nd Case of Meningitis at PC

The Rhode Island Department of Health has received a report of a probable case of meningitis at Providence College. If it is confirmed, this would be the second case of meningitis at Providence College this week.  

The Department of Health reported a confirmed case  on Monday, February 2.

“We are working closely with Providence College in administering antibiotics to students on campus who were in close contact with the two individuals who are sick," said Michael Fine, M.D., the Director of the Rhode Island Department of Health.

Meningitis is an infection of the lining around the brain and spinal cord. The bacterial infection can be spread through direct secretions from the nose or mouth through activities like kissing, sharing food, drinks, water bottles, toothbrushes, eating utensils, or cigarettes. 

Meningococcal disease can be treated with antibiotics, but quick medical attention is very important.
