Providence City Council Proposes Tobacco-Free Parks

Providence City Council has proposed legislation that would prohibit the use of any type of tobacco in public park spaces in the city. The ordinance was introduced at the July 2 Council meeting.

Council President Michael A. Solomon and Majority Leader Seth Yurdin are responsible for the proposed legislation.

Under the ordinance, it would be illegal to sell or use tobacco in a City-owned park, playground or recreational area. Violations would be subject to a $50 fine. The ban would apply to all tobacco products, including, among others, cigarettes, cigars, and electronic cigarettes.

Council President Solomon stated, “The Council has a strong track record of adopting laws that protect children from the dangers of tobacco. By prohibiting the use of tobacco products in our parks, playgrounds, and recreation centers, we will reduce the amount of exposure our kids have to nicotine and second-hand smoke, as well as the health risks associated with tobacco.”

Councilman Yurdin said, “”Everyone should be able to enjoy the fresh air in our parks and open spaces without having to breathe in harmful cigarette smoke. We’ll continue to do everything possible to keep tobacco products away from minors, and prohibiting tobacco use in our parks and playgrounds is another step in the right direction.”

The proposal was discussed in the April and May meetings of the Board of Park Commissioners.

Mayor Angel Taveras stated, “Keeping tobacco products out of our parks, playgrounds and green public spaces is an important step toward building a healthier city. This ordinance builds on the City’s work aimed at protecting children from the harmful effects of tobacco and making Providence a healthier place to live and raise a family.”
