Country Folk at Columbus
An indie folk show starts off the weekend tonight at the Columbus Theatre in Providence. Nashville singer-songwriter Zach Schmidt is in town along with local favs Cowboy and Lady. Schmidt is a singer in the vein of Steve Earle, spinning tales “rich with imagery and stories of hard work and heartbreak.” Cowboy and Lady just released their first album, finely crafted in the tradition of Johnny and June. We imagine you’ll see more than one cowboy hat tonight when the bands take the stage at 9PM. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
Rock Out at Xfinity
Three big shows come to the Xfinity Center in Mansfield this week starting tonight with 90’s bands Weezer and Panic at the Disco. Next Tuesday metal heads will want to catch Slipknot along with Marilyn Manson and Of Mice and Men. And on Thursday, classic rock veterans Steely Dan and Steve Winwood hit the Mansfield stage. Bob and Mavis at Foxwoods
On Sunday, two legends will appear at Foxwoods as Mavis Staples joins Bob Dylan in concert. Staples was recently announced a 2016 Kennedy Center Award winner. We loved her show with Joan Osborne reviewed here from last November in Providence. Both artists have albums out with Dylan having jut released his second album of standards entitled "Fallen Angels." Note: don’t expect any collaborations on stage - Dylan’s not the sentimental type, even though the pair almost married years ago. A lot of fun to be had at this one – a few tickets remain here.
Revival Fest July 4th
If you’re the capital city this July 4th, be sure to stop by DUSK to check out Revival Fest II. The 2nd annual event begins at 12:30 PM on two stages and features over 20 area bands playing all night long. Bands include Black Oil Incinerator (pictured), Atlantic Thrills, Beta Hotel, Smith and Weeden, Quahogs, Z-Boys, Tall Teenagers and many more. Invisible Hours at AS220
A record release show comes to AS220 tonight with local indie band The Invisible Hours. The band's new recording, Wake the Ghosts of Night, is described as " fast, gritty songs for a dark evening in the city." Openers tonight include Boston garage rockers Hands and Knees and Providence literary punks Gertrude Atherton. Ticket $7 at the door - music starts around 9:30.
