5 Live Music Musts - May 8, 2015

The “City by the Sea” gets our attention this week as some big concerts sail into town with the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover. We’ve got Rock, Reggae and The Voice on “5 Live Music Musts.”

Tomorrow night, the Reggae Rally, a program of the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover, takes place at Fort Adams State Park in Newport. The concert includes three bands, John Brown’s Body, Mighty Mystic and Newport’s The Ravers. Great weather is expected so get out there and enjoy the vibes starting at 6PM. Tickets are $25 in advance, $35 day of show with discounts available here.

Of Monster and Men at Lupos Saturday

Of Monsters and Men is a popular Indie Rock group from Iceland who hit it big in 2011 with their hit “Little Talks,” a tune which reached #1 on the Alternative charts. They’ll be at Lupo’s in Providence tomorrow night as they prepare to release a new album, Beneath the Skin.  Highasakite and Early Show open at 7PM. Tickets are $35 in advance, $45 at the door

Rising Appalachia at the Met Sunday

Sunday brings Americana/Roots/World artist Rising Appalachia to the Met in Pawtucket. The band, led by sisters Leah and Chloe Smith, blends numerous styles together with numerous instruments for a very pleasing result. Check out their new CD, Wider Circles, a crowd-funded release that showcases their Indie Roots sound.  Show is at 8PM, tickets $17 in advance, $20 at the door.

Cowsills at Misquamicut Saturday

Rhode Island’s favorite family band, The Cowsills, return to the area tomorrow for a special show as part of the Misquamicut Springfest. The Newport natives are members of the RI Music Hall of Fame and had a number of Top 40 hits in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Springfest includes a wide range of family activities all day long. The band takes the stage around 7PM. Additional performers include Jay Taylor and Jason Cardinal. Admission is $7 and parking is free.

Rhode Island’s hometown girl, Sarah Potenza, gained a lot well deserved attention recently with her appearance on NBC’s The Voice.  She returns to town and will be headlining at Fort Adams next Thursday May 14 with another Voice veteran Anita Antoinette. Potenza will be playing with a full band, and we look forward to seeing what she offers her post-Voice career evolves. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 day of show. Music begins at 6PM with Emma Joy Galvin.
