JAZZ - Regina Carter at RISD Auditorium
FirstWorks RI brings Jazz violinist Regina Carter to town this week. Carter’s been performing at area schools all week and tomorrow night, her quintet plays a show at the RISD Auditorium in Providence. She’s widely seen as the leading Jazz violinist of her generation and will feature music from her latest release, Southern Comfort, a blend of folk, spiritual, gospel and coal mining work songs. Tickets start at $20 and the show begins at 8PM.

The Classical music season is heating up and tomorrow night, the Rhode Island Philharmonic has an impressive line-up. They open with Festive Overture, by Dimitri Shostakovich, followed by Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.2 with guest pianist Jon Nakamatsu. The main event is Scheherazade, a tour-de-force from famed Russian composer Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, inspired by the tales of The Arabian Nights. The Symphony performs at 8PM at The Vets.
ROOTS - Bluegrass Gospel Project at Stone Soup
The Bluegrass Gospel Project is a six piece band founded by fiddler Gene White and led by veteran Blugrass player Taylor Armerding (Northern Lights). They’ll bring their upbeat sound to the Stone Soup Coffeehouse in Pawtucket Saturday night for the start of their East Coast tour. Tickets are $20 for the 7PM show. Reminder: Stone Soup concerts are now held at the Slater Mill.
ROCK – The Empty Hearts at Park Theatre
The Empty Hearts are a rock and roll supergroup made up of members of The Cars, Blondie, The Romantics and The Chesterfield Kings. They’ll be at the Park Theatre Sunday night for the fourth show on their debut tour. Novices should expect a lesson in rock and roll from these guys. ROLL - Drive-By Truckers at the Met
One of the most relevant rock and roll bands on earth is playing The Met next Tuesday October 21st. The Drive-By Truckers are a critically acclaimed rock band from Muscle Shoales, Alabama. LIke Bruce Springsteen and Tom Waits, they tell stories of complex characters who are sometimes living on the fringes. Check out our interview with Truckers guitarist Mike Cooley from earlier this year. RI Roots rockers The Silks open at 9PM – tickets are $22.50 in advance, $25 at the door.
