The Pronk Festival Returns to the Streets of Providence Monday

The holiday weekend brings a mountain of music to the GoLocal area featuring a couple of classic rock bands, a celebration of a classic Providence venue, and a festival of horns. Read on for our top picks in local music in “5 Live Music Musts.”

Lupo’s 40th Anniversary at the Met

RI’s best rock club turns 40 this weekend and the celebration features some top local favorites. The Lupo's anniversary continues tonight with rock and roll from The Schemers, Neutral Nation, Jungle Dogs and Rash. Tomorrow, check out Razzz and members of the Wild Turkey Band with Tom Keegan. And Sunday, don’t miss what is rumored to be final show ever from the most legendary of all RI bands, The Young Adults. RI Music Hall Inductees Georgie Porgie and the Cry Babies open. Badfinger at Stadium Theatre Tonight

Tonight at Woonsocket’s Stadium Theatre, check out Badfinger starring original guitarist Joey Molland. The power pop band with the best haircuts topped the charts in the early 70’s with enduring hits like “Baby Blue,” “Day After Day,” and “No Matter What.” They were the most sucessful band on the Apple label after the Beatles. Lupo's Turns 40 this Weekend

Zombies at Park Saturday

The Zombies were part of the British Invasion of the 1960’s. They’re best known for hits like “She’s Not There,” “Tell Her No,” and “Time of the Season.” They are also well known among enthusiasts to have recorded an album that became a cult favorite and is considered one of the top albums of all time. They’re planning a full play of that album, Odyssey and Oracle, tomorrow night at the Park Theatre. Pronk Festival in Providence Monday

Monday’s holiday means it’s time for the annual Pronk (Providence Honk) Festival. The event is described as “street intervention like no other, with outfits and misfits from Rhode Island and beyond - musicians, artists, activists, makers…” The free event brings together over a dozen brass bands from around the country including RI’s own What Cheer Brigade and the Extraordinary Rendition Band. It’s organized anarchy of the highest form. Music begins Monday at 2:30 at Burnside Park downtown and works its way to India Point Park where the party continues all night long – click here for more information.

Jesse Malin at Firehouse 13 Tonight

Our pick for Indie show of the week goes to Jesse Malin who makes a rare appearance tonight at Firehouse 13 in Providence. Malin’s roots in punk have influenced his career, which has included playing with everyone from Green Day to Bruce Springsteen. After a 5 year hiatus, Malin just released a new album, New York Before the War. Tickets are $12 in advance, $14 at the door with singer songwriter Mathew Ryan opening.
