Rhythm and Roots

The Rhythm and Roots Festival has grown from a small regional event to a top drawing national festival. Major performers like Bruce Hornsby, Taj Mahal and leading Americana artist Lucinda Williams will be at Ninigret State Park in Charlestown this weekend. The festival is easy to get to and even more fun when you get there. (Read – no Newport Traffic.) There are musical workshops, surprise performances and the best kids tent anywhere! Rhythm and Roots RI

RI born Sarah Potenza is one of the many “locals” appearing on the bill this year. That is, locals with national and international reputations. Other area artists include Morganeve Swain leading her band The Huntress and the Holder of Hands, Grammy winning Roomful of Blues, guitar great Duke Robillard, and area favorites Longshot Voodoo. Most of the RI based artists play tonight, with Potenza and Swain around all weekend. Check here for the complete schedule.

Hip Hop Peace Fest

On an entirely different note, head to The Met tonight for the 6th Rhode Island Hip Hop Peace Fest. Several leading artists who represent the local Hip Hop scene will be performing including Chachi Carvalho, Jon Hope, Cam Bells and Project 401. Artists will be backed by the International Players Band. Music starts at 9PM, tickets are $12 at the door.

Dick Dale

If you want to see a true legend in a small club, head down to the Ocean Mist tonight for a rare show from the “King of Surf Guitar” Dick Dale. The 79 year old guitar guru has made news lately regarding the reason for his need to tour. He’s literally touring for his life to obtain funds for lifesaving medication for him and his wife. But its no oldies show … a quick peek at YouTube shows he can still knock your socks off. Show is tonight at 9PM – late word is that its sold out.

Machines With Magnets

Machines with Magnets is a unique listening room in downtown Pawtucket. Part recording studio/part concert venue, MWM regularly presents indie acts from folk to metal. Next Thursday September 8, things lean more indie folk with NYC’s The Ferdy Mayne, along with supporting acts Haunt the House and Dan Blakeslee. Music starts around 8PM.
