Old Glory Relay at Alex and Ani
The cross-country Old Glory Relay made a stop in Cranston Wednesday morning.

The relay, which lasts from September 11 to November 11, follows a single flag that is passed by teams of runners from one coast to the other. The event kicked off Tuesday in Boston and will conclude in San Diego, California.

The relay is organized by Team Red White and Blue, an organization that is dedicated to helping service members adjust to life as veterans.

"Team RMB's mission to is to connect veterans to their community through physical and social activity," Sarah Holzhalb, Relationships Manager for Team RWB. "This event is our most important to connect veterans with their communities across the country. We're trying to close the gap of the military-civilian divide."

Charles Badgley, an Army veteran, was selected to carry to flag for this leg of the relay.

"I spent 20 years and 22 days in the army, and that American flag represents everything that we fought for, and I wouldn't do it any other way," Badgley said. "It's the unity of the entire nation. When you start in the great Northeast and you end in the far Southwest, you take it across the wide range of the U.S., from coast to coast we have to be one unity and one mind. Everybody's equal and should be treated the same."

Alex and Ani is a major partner with the organization, and Holzhalb said bringing the stop to the Cranston headquarters was a way of showing their appreciation.

"It's a really wonderful relationship," Holznalb said. "We have a couple of different pieces with them through their charity by design campaign."

As part of the event, the Alex and Ani Cranston opened early, with a portion of proceeds going towards Team RWB.

"We so proud of everything we've been able to accomplish together with Team Red White and Blue and with our "Today is a Gift" charm. We've been able to give over $270,000 to their cause to support veterans and all the programs they support. We're honored to partner with them and with their mission, and to be part of Old Glory's trail across the country," said Colleen Fulgere, Vice President of Partnerships and Brand Licensing at Alex and Ani.

Following the event, the flag continued on its national journey with a team of bikers. The next stop will be in New York City from September 17 through 19.

In all, the flag will be passed between 10,000 sets of hands as it completes its 4,300-mile trip.
