RI's Best Public Golf Courses

For the smallest state, Rhode Island is home to some of the best golf courses in the country. From oceanfront Scottish links courses to classic Donald Ross layouts, Rhody has something for every golfer. We consulted with our lowest-handicapped friends, and bring you the finest public courses open to all.

Triggs Memorial Golf Course (1533 Chalkstone Ave, Providence) was designed and built by legendary golf architect Donald Ross in the heart of Providence in 1932 (it was heavily restored in the '90s). Its classic layout includes 18 great holes with superb fairways and greens. The general rates are only $40 for 18 (walking), but they are currently offering some Summer Specials, like $45 for 18 with a cart on weekends (after 2pm). To book tee times call 521-8460 or 521-8462.
Montaup Country Club (500 Anthony Rd, Portsmouth) is a beautifully manicured semi-private club (meaning only some hours - 11-3 weekdays and after 1:30pm weekends - are public) with scenic views of Mount Hope Bridge and the Bay (best seen from the 16th hole). Be ready for a challenge because Montaup's first three holes are regarded as one of the toughest openers in the area. Summer Green Fees are $47 (walking) and $37 after 4pm. To book tee times call 683-0955 (three days in advance recommended).

Richmond Country Club (74 Sandy Pond Rd, Richmond) may sound like it's private, but it's fully public and a great change of pace from your typical New England course. It is a shorter course, carved out of tall pines giving it a relaxing Carolina feel (above). And the best part is you can play the course for only $20 weekdays after 3pm (Otherwise, $35 weekdays and $40 weekends). To book tee times call 364-9292.
