Thanks to a new law passed this past General Assembly session, you can now buy beer, wine, and liquor at Rhode Island liquor stores on New Year's Day finally.

Representative  William W. O’Brien’s (D-Dist. 54, North Providence) legislation (2021-H 5504), which was signed into law, allows liquor stores to sell alcoholic beverages on New Year’s Day -- and it goes into effect this holiday season.

“I am very happy that this law is in effect for the coming holiday.  COVID-19 has decimated our small businesses and this law is another small way we can help our small businesses recover from the pandemic," said O'Brien.

If a liquor store chooses to be open on New Year’s Day, they should be allowed to operate their business, simple as that,” he added.

Previously, retail Class A license liquor stores were not permitted to be open on Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.
