Clay Rockefeller: 14 Who Made a Difference in RI in 2014

With the success of the Steel Yard already an accomplishment for Rockefeller -- and boon for Providence -- the entrepreneur added the Dean Hotel to his list of impactful projects, and accolades soon followed suit.

Partnering with Providence native and developer Ari Heckman, Rockefeller oversaw the opening of The Dean on Fountain Street this past spring, turning a location that once used to be a violence-prone "gentlemen's club" into an award-winning addition to the Providence hotel -- and nightlife -- scene.

The 52 room hotel, which boasts a German-style beer hall, a karaoke lounge, an artisanal coffee shop, and a cocktail lounge, not only was quickly embraced by a loyal local following, it was featured in the April 2014 edition of Surface Magazine, and written up in publications ranging from Business Insider, to the Daily Mail.

Fast forward to this past July, when The Boombox, billed as "Providence’s first and only karaoke lounge", opened at the Dean.

“I am thrilled to be open at The Dean and to be a part of such an iconic downtown transformation,” said Boombox owner Ethan Feirstein, who owns The Salon bar just a few blocks away at 57 Eddy Street. “I see The Boombox as a fantastic compliment to the other food & beverage options in the hotel and love that both hotel guests as well as Rhode Island locals have been joining us for a riotously good time. The response from customers so far has been nothing short of extraordinary and we already have a diehard group of regulars who come back night after night.“

Whether it's providing cool new gathering spots, or offering metalworking opportunities for Providence youth, Rockefeller has continued to make Providence a place people want to visit -- and call home.
